Colin, aged 67, lives with his wife in Branston, Lincolnshire. In November 2021, he experienced a life-changing stroke that brought an abrupt end to his career as an HGV driver.

Prior to this, Colin was active and independent. However, the stroke left him with significant physical challenges, including loss of movement down his right side and loss of sight in his left eye. His mobility is now limited; although he can stand with support, walking is difficult due to COPD and unpredictable leg tremors. As a result, he spends much of his time seated for safety or keeping busy by tinkering with projects in his garden shed.

As well as the physical impact, these changes have affected many aspects of Colin’s daily life, including his ability to manage personal care independently.

Before the Closomat

Before having a Closomat installed, toileting was one of the most difficult and uncomfortable aspects of Colin’s daily routine.

Due to restricted movement, Colin was unable to clean himself effectively. He often had to rely on his wife for support, which he found difficult.

My wife had to help me, which was quite embarrassing. added Colin.

Attempts to manage independently were challenging and sometimes painful, Using his non-dominant hand led to discomfort, soreness and ongoing hygiene concerns.

Installation and Adaptation

Colin was introduced to the Closomat through a local authority Disability Grant adaptation, which included converting his bathroom in his bungalow into a fully accessible wet room.

I’d never heard of a wash and dry toilet before, but I jumped at the chance.

The new bathroom setup includes a level-access shower with seat and improved layout, but for Colin, the Closomat quickly became the most valuable part of the adaptation.

The Closomat is the star of the show – I call it the best seat in the house.

The system was configured to suit Colin’s needs, allowing him to operate it using elbow controls, which is essential given his limited arm mobility. A soft padded seat also adds comfort and support.

The Impact

The difference the Closomat has made has been transformative for Colin.

Although he still requires support with other aspects of daily living, the Closomat has significantly improved his ability to manage toileting more comfortably and with less reliance on others. The wash and dry function supports effective hygiene, reducing discomfort and helping to prevent skin irritation.

This has led to meaningful improvements in several areas:

  • Comfort: Reduced soreness and improved hygiene
  • Dignity: Less reliance on his wife for intimate care
  • Ease of use: Simple, accessible controls suited to his mobility
  • Quality of life: Greater confidence and reassurance in daily routines

Reflection

Reflecting on his experience, Colin is clear about the difference the Closomat has made, not only for him, but also for his wife as his primary carer.

It’s made life so much easier for both of us. It’s an absolute game changer and I believe every home should have a Closomat.

For Colin, what was once a difficult and often distressing part of the day is now something he can approach with confidence and comfort.

Testimonial – Colin

Before the Closomat, toileting was really difficult. I couldn’t manage properly on my own and my wife had to help me, which was quite embarrassing.

Now, it’s completely different. It’s comfortable, easy to use and it just works. The warm water and drying function make such a difference – it’s improved things massively for me.

I call it the best seat in the house. It really is a game changer – I can’t fault it.
