One of England’s few outdoor water parks is now fully inclusive – with the addition of a new toilet.

Sandy Lane Aqua Park & Play Area in Chester – a unique water park on the banks of the River Dee – is the latest venue to open a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet. The facility compliments Cheshire West & Chester Council’s similar toilets at Grosvenor Park and Frodsham Street, and is part of a significant investment by the Council in improved public toilets at the location.

Bigger than conventional wheelchair-accessible toilets, Changing Places are designed to enable people who need the help of a carer for their personal hygiene to access appropriate facilities when away from home: the alternative would be to be laid on the toilet floor to be changed, cut the trip short, or not go there at all.

Supplied by Closomat and installed by Novus Solutions, the Sandy Lane Changing Places goes beyond the standard requirements for the facility: in addition to the height adjustable adult-sized changing bench and hoist that are core components that differentiate a Changing Places toilet,it incorporates a Closomat Palma Vita wash/dry toilet, with touch-sensitive hand switch. The Closomat has built-in douching and drying, and means anyone using the toilet does not have to wipe, or be wiped, clean afterwards, improving dignity and hygiene for all concerned.

The Changing Places toilet means the fun offered at Sandy Lane can be enjoyed by even more people” explained Councillor Louise Gittins, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Wellbeing.

We are committed to investing in inclusive leisure and culture, making West Cheshire a great place to live and visit.

Adding a Closomat wash/dry toilet in place of a conventional WC further extends accessibility.

Adds Kelvin Grimes, Closomat’s Changing Places project manager,

We know through our now vast experience in supplying and installing these toilets what a difference they make to people who care for someone with disabilities, especially children. A Changing Places means they can go and enjoy days out that the majority of families take for granted.

The toilet facilities are open during Park opening times and accessed via a RADAR key; an attendant on-site ensures they are kept clean.
